Summary:
The project is a collaborative effort – between community leaders of Jacmel, a Haitain construction school for teenagers, and US caring citizens – to construct an eco-efficient center for children in Jacmel Haiti. The center will provide food gardens, housing, class room facilities, recreational areas and dining facilities.
The Center is designed with passive energy considerations as well as options for active energy upgrades.
Project Description:
Jacmel – 19,000 SF undeveloped property with plans for: a gated 12-foot cement block wall bordering the property for the safety of the children, a large two-story 13000SF structure and a landscaping/recreation area. The structure will consist of:
- Bedrooms: The Center will offer accommodations for 60-90 children (depending on the use of bunks) between the “entrance” ages of 2 and 10. It will consist of manager rooms, storage and closets.
- Classrooms/Study/Dining Rooms: Spaces for culinary facilities and tables for dining/study/classroom as well as recreation areas.
- Food Gardens: Interior courtyard space as well as space between the perimeter wall and exterior of the structure will include vegetable beds, fruit trees and a planned fish pond.
The structure will be designed using active and passive energy techniques including heat evacuation, operable altitude windows, fan systems with roof system with the option upgrade for pv panels or inlaid SSR roof depending on total funds raised.
The plans are designed by Haitians Bonite Affriany and Gerard Clodomir, and award-winning US environmental architect Ed Weinstein of Weinstein AU.
